Sopwell History Walk

On Saturday 17th September 2011, we organised what has become an annual event on the calendar, a history walk around Sopwell.

We met at 2pm by the seats in the Nunnery Open Space in Cottonmill Lane.

Participation was free and the walk was led by Councillor Eileen Harris with input on the natural environment from Chris Pudsey.

This year, the city's archeologist, Simon West, also joined us and gave us an insight into what is below the ground!

E.g. did you know that what looks like an old lamp post on the street can in fact be a stench pipe in disguise, for the underground sewers. Simon pointed one out on Belmont Hill, see picture below (or click on the link to see it on Google Maps Street View).
