150th Hatfield Railway Celebrations

London Road Station in 1950s (now a nursery)

The 16th of October marks the 150th anniversary of the opening of the railway line from St Albans to Hatfield, now the Alban Way. The line first opened on 16th October 1865.

To celebrate the occasion, from Friday, 16th October until Sunday, 18th October, there will be a lot going on along the whole line!

Have a look at the programme of events flyer on-line here (PDF) courtesy of the Smallford Residents Association - another SRA :-) - or visit their website at smallford.org for even more information and last minute updates.

In the Sopwell Residents Association, we are entering into the spirit of the whole celebration weekend. Our stretch is from the Abbey Station to the former London Road station, now a nursery.

We need help to man our stand at the London Road station on Sunday 18th October, from 10 am to 4 pm. The Railway Celebration subcommittee will be in attendance but we need volunteers to help out during the day with manning the SRA stand and to marshall the area.

We also need help erecting the marquees close to the bridge by Old London Road station in Orient Close (now Monkey Puzzle nursery) from 8am, and dismantling them again at 4pm(ish) when the event closes.

We will be having some musicians and dancers so we need to ensure the performance area is kept clear of passing cyclists and walkers. If you could spare an hour or two during the day, we would be ever so grateful.

Below is a timetable, so if you could kindly contact us indicating which slot(s) you could manage, this would help us enormously. High-viz jackets - and name badges! - will be provided on the day.

08.00 - 09.00  Marquee Assembly
09.00 - 10.30  Getting stand ready and welcoming first walkers/cyclists
10.30 - 12.00  Manning SRA marquee and marshalling
12.00 - 13.30  Ditto
13.30 - 15.00  Ditto
15.00 - 16.30  Ditto plus clearing up/dismantling marquees

Thank you, and hope to see many of you on the day!
