The Sopwell Project

The Sopwell Project is an ongoing project to research the history of the Sopwell area including mapping the changes to the built environment.

We have been fortunate in obtaining a grant from Herts County Council under the Locality Budget in 2009.

Our aims are:

  • to interview many of the elderly residents to collect and preserve their recent memories;
  • to research the local newspapers and archives;
  • and to share all the research with the community.

Some information we have gathered already. For example, Sopwell was once proposed as the site for the Royal Agricultural show in 1894. Unfortunately they chose Cambridge!

There is also a lovely description of a Saturday afternoon ramble around St Albans to Harpenden in the Daily News of 1900 which includes part of Sopwell.

Early in 2012, the research resulted in the book "Sopwell: a history and collection of memories", written and compiled by Sandy Norman and published by the SRA with the help of local sponsors.

In October 2012, we obtained grant funding for our "More Memories of Sopwell" project, to continue and broaden our research.
